Actually there are a lot of reasons and definitely not one and the only. As many resources say - mainly they are not homosexual. Actually about 90% crossdressers are heterosexual. And there really is no reason to talk about sexual orientation, it mostly has nothing to do with crossdressing, except for some cases. It is impossible to count these reasons so there will be 5 most heard reasons.
1. Some men dresses into lingerie because it is a big turn-on for them. It can be only sexual thing for them, just to ad something new and exciting to their sexual life.
2. Dresses because like the feel of woman clothes on their body. As we all know, woman clothes are very nice and fine, so the feeling of wearing them is very different from male clothes.
3. Dress because has fun in this way. One's hobby is to ride a Harley Davidson in Summers, another one likes snowboarding, some likes to crossdress.
4. Some men like to crossdress to go out on a date. Part of them even on a date with a man because they not only want to look and behave like women but also want to be treated like one. Sometimes they are just going on a date without anything more, but there are cases where man, who had been married, goes on a date with a man as a female and even gets intimate with him later on. In this case I wouldn't consider him a heterosexual. By any means there is nothing wrong with it. Actually this is a level higher of feeling feminine - being with a man, so if someone is curious, go for it.
5. People are in question, or even has no question about their gender - they just want to be women. In this case it can be very difficult story, ending up in the hospital changing their sex.
Of course there can be completely different reasons, like earning money working as a Drag Queen or completely individual ones. And it doesn't mean much. Important is to achieve the desired target - look, feel, be as feminine as it is needed and possible.
